.: Featured as Art Tatum in the Movie Ray

Johnny O’Neal played the part of legendary pianist Art Tatum in  the 2004 Academy Award Nominated film “Ray”.  Director Taylor Hackford wanted a great pianist for this part, as his playing was to be included in the film.  He knew that the only pianist to call upon was Johnny O’Neal.  The reason?  Johnny is today’s Art Tatum, the pianist with chops as prodigious as Tatum’s….

.: Renowned Pianist & Vocalist

A fixture on the World's Premier Jazz Cruise

Whether it is playing Art Tatum in "Ray" or playing piano like few men have ever done, Johnny O'Neal knows how to perform and entertain. The most difficult element of his performances is finding a seat and then being able to sit still in it. The man just makes you want to move.    The Jazz Cruise

.: Experience the swing....

  • Influenced most by such pianists as Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Hank Jones and Errol Garner, O'Neal is an extremely moving musician whose blend of styles (blues, gospel, stride) can take your breath away. Justin Time Records
  • Johnny has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa as a headline artist,  as well as five trips to Japan with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

  • On  his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985...   Mr. O'Neal concentrated on richly harmonized, rhythmically propulsive renditions of standards.   Mr. O'Neal's rendition of ''Love for Sale'' was characteristic of a methodical approach that made each song a confident musical arc, encompassing stride and boogie-woogie variations and peaking in agitated Errol Garnerish right-handed chord clusters. N.Y. Times
  • At 19, Johnny made his first recording and went on to perform at New York's Blue Note club. As a member of Art Blakey's prestigious Jazz Messengers, O'Neal performed with some of the great jazz divas Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson and Carmen McRae.
  • Inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998.
